Kel Suu Lake

Kel Suu Lake, located at an altitude of 3500 meters in the southeastern part of the Naryn region near the Kyrgyzstan-China border, is a high-altitude glacial lake. It is known for its mesmerizing views, with water ranging from brownish-sandy to bright turquoise. This makes it one of the most beautiful yet challenging destinations in Kyrgyzstan.

Kel Suu Lake is a landslide-type lake formed in a large depression between cliffs. The majority of the lake is not visible from the shore, so to fully appreciate its beauty, one must take a boat and float on its waters. The lake stretches for 9 kilometers in length, with a width ranging from 500 meters to 2 kilometers at its widest point.

The lake’s name, Kel Suu, translates to “disappearing water” in the Kyrgyz language. This peculiar feature gives the lake its unique name. Indeed, the water sometimes disappears, flowing into underground caves and grottoes. Therefore, it is important to be aware that there may be occasions when the lake cannot be fully experienced.
