Journey to the Pearls of Kyrgyzstan: Issyk Kul, Son Kul, and Altyn Arashan + Trekking

Arrival at the airport or meeting in the city, we will proceed to Chon-Kemin. In the Chon-Kemin Gorge, we will travel along a stunning mountain road, making several stops to admire the panoramic views. Next, we will visit the popular and incredibly beautiful Kegety Gorge. Then, we will continue to the Burana Museum.

Burana Tower is a minaret from the 10th-11th century in the Chui Valley in northern Kyrgyzstan. It is located 80 km from the capital city of Bishkek, 12 km southwest of the town of Tokmok. The tower is part of the specially protected archaeological and architectural complex called “Burana Tower” and is recognized as a cultural heritage monument. It is one of the oldest structures in Central Asia.

Upon arrival in the valley, we will have some rest and, if desired, take a leisurely walk. Upon return, we will have dinner.

Breakfast. Moving to the city of Karakol.
On the way, we will visit the extremely interesting place of Kok-Moinok canyons. Colorful and unique canyons with their relief. It was named after the neighboring village of Kok-Moinok.

Afterwards, we will pass through two gorges, where all the classic Kyrgyz panoramas are gathered: alpine meadows, forest-covered mountain slopes, rivers, and visit a mountain lake in the Grigoryevsky gorge.

Arriving in Karakol, you visit the Orthodox Church and the Dungan Mosque.

After beautiful breakfast we leave the city of Karakol and head to Karakol Gorge early in the morning. The drive to the trailhead will take about 30 minutes. Upon arrival at the meeting point, we introduce ourselves to the staff, pack our backpacks, and begin our journey. After approximately 2-2.5 hours of easy walking through an untouched river valley, we will stop for lunch by a small lake. After lunch, we continue moving up the valley before turning left to start the ascent towards Kurgak-Tor (Dry Gorge). This is where the trail becomes much steeper, crossing dense forest and ascending the mountainside to a tent camp at an altitude of 3000m. This part of the journey will take about 2 hours. We will spend the night near a children’s shelter, where there is a cabin that can be used as a kitchen and dining area in inclement weather. The total distance to our camping site will be 13-14 km, taking a total of 4-5 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

The second day of our journey is just as exciting. We will start at a leisurely pace, taking about 2-3 hours to hike up to Lake Ala-Kol (3532m). After a snack and rest, while admiring the breathtaking view of the beautiful turquoise lake and the surrounding mountains with their snow-capped peaks, we will continue along the northern shore to the other side of Ala-Kol. From here, we will have to climb again to the pass (3860m) from where we can see all the nearby peaks of Terskey Ala-Too Mountains, encircling the lake and rising to heights of over 5000m above sea level.

We will descend into the Altyn-Arashan Valley, known for its hot springs (2500m). The descent takes about 3-3.5 hours, depending on the pace. Upon arrival, we will set up our tents and then enjoy a relaxing bath in the hot springs. Overnight stay in tents or guesthouses.

After breakfast, we will make a gradual transition to the side valley of Anir-Tor. Here, we will get a closer look at the life of shepherds and have the opportunity to try homemade sour cream with fresh bread. Afterward, we will return to the camp and continue our descent along the Altyn-Arashan Valley towards the village of Aksu. The descent covers a distance of 14 km, or approximately 3-3.5 hours. Along the way, we will stop for a picnic. In the village, a vehicle will be waiting for us to take us back to Karakol.

After breakfast, we will embark on a transfer to the village of Bokonbaevo. Our plan includes a visit to the famous Jety-Oguz Gorge, where we will hike up to a panoramic viewpoint that offers stunning views of the entire valley. We will then continue towards the village of Bokonbaevo, with our next stop planned at the picturesque Barskoon Gorge, where we will visit two beautiful waterfalls. We will then make another stop at a popular canyon on the southern coast of Issyk-Kul Lake called Skazka (Fairy Tale Canyon). This canyon is easily accessible and renowned for its stunning landscapes and contrasting formations. The ongoing erosion over thousands of years has formed various whimsical rock and clay figures in the canyon. Skazka is composed of colorful clays, minerals, and rock formations, adding to the beauty of this place. After our visit, we will continue our journey to the village of Bokonbaevo. Upon arrival, we will check into our accommodation and have a meeting with local ethnic musicians after dinner.

After a leisurely breakfast, we will head to Son Kul Lake. Along the way, we will make several stops, and our first one will be to meet a berkutchi – a hunter who hunts using eagles and watch an eagle show.

Next, we will have an atmospheric stop at the Ak Sai Canyons, where we will take a short walk to enjoy the magnificent panoramic views. On our way back, we will have the opportunity to take a refreshing swim in Issyk Kul Lake. Afterward, we will drive to Kochkor, where we will have lunch. From there, we will continue our journey to Son Kul Lake.

Son Kul is a large mountain lake nestled in a basin between the inner ranges of the Tian Shan mountain system. It is located between the Son Köl Too and Moldo Too ridges, at an altitude of 3016m above sea level in the northwestern part of the Naryn region. The lake holds great potential for ecological tourism. It has a length of 29km, a maximum depth of 14m, and an average depth of 8.6m. The Son Kul River flows out of the lake. The absolute elevation of the lake is 3013.6-3016m.

We will stay overnight in a yurt camp on the lakeshore. There is an optional option to enjoy a traditional sauna (banya) experience.

After breakfast, we will set off towards Bishkek. However, before reaching the city, we will make a stop to admire the view from Moldo Ashuu Pass. We will then continue towards Terskey Torpok Pass, also known as “33 Parrots” by the locals. We will travel along the southern coast, reaching the pass and stopping at an observation deck to capture beautiful photos. We will then descend through a scenic winding pass and make a stop at Son Kul Waterfall at the foot of the pass. Afterwards, we will continue our journey to Bishkek through Dolon Pass. By evening, we will arrive in Bishkek and check into our hotel.
